Biden is already raring to announce his mask mandates once he takes office, as we all expected. Of course, there are some people who are wondering how Biden can possibly expect to do that when there are already so many people who have caught the virus. By the time he officially takes office, a significant percentage of the country will have already had it.
The nation may be decadent but the pandemic has exposed a lot of cracks in the foundation. If anything, Biden should whip off his mask and celebrate. Our foolish philosophies and half measures have gotten to a place where we can reasonably expect partial herd immunity. Three cheers for the US of A!
That’s not to say that we don’t see any reason for the mask mandate. If anything, Biden is actually smart to put a definite time limit on the order. Americans have been told that they need to take all sorts of precautions but they are not being told how long the process is going to take. That causes people to lose faith and proceed as if nothing is wrong.
When you’re not being given an end date for the current ordeal, people are eventually going to decide to live their lives. Biden seems to understand the basic elements of this problem. No one wants to be told that they need to do something indefinitely. The social distancing journey that we have been on has been unfolding over the course of the past nine months.
We are still no closer to normalcy and the new plan appears to be all too simple. Trump has never been motivated to issue any health-related mandates and he’s not going to spend the next month and change worrying about a problem that is no longer his. Americans aren’t going to be willing to give up their holiday gatherings either.
By the time Biden arrives, the death toll is going to be well over 300,000 and may very well have cracked the 400,000 mark. We’re already over 280,000 and Christmas is just three weeks away. At this stage, America seems ready to live with the virus until the vaccine arrives. Biden’s mask timetable is set to expire at the end of April.
The hope is that the vaccine would be ready for distribution by then. There is also a certain wisdom to continuing mask mandates once the vaccinations have begun. There are too many people out there who are going to make sure that they are back outside as soon as they have received the first dose.
This is not the time for anyone to be letting their guard down, though. That’s why Biden is establishing his expectations early on. This lets people know that they can reasonably expect to start the process of resuming public life by the time spring rolls around. American complacency is reaching an all-time high and Biden’s new plans are the best way to counterprogram against this.
“President-elect Joe Biden tells CNN’s Jake Tapper he will ask all Americans to wear masks for the first 100 days after he takes office: “I think we’ll see a significant reduction … to drive down the numbers considerably,” reports the CNN account. This probably won’t be a big deal to most of the country because they have been wearing masks diligently. Biden’s worry is more focused on the idea of people slacking off before they should. That seems legitimate enough.
Biden also plans to keep Fauci on board, which is another no brainer. The polls show that Fauci has the approval of at least two-thirds of the country. Getting rid of him at this point does not look good. Only those who follow the word of Tucker Carlson religiously have anything against Fauci. Kamala Harris and Barack Obama are also going to be tasked with convincing the liberals that the vaccinations are safe. Best of luck to them!
