Biden Pinned a Medal on a Woman Who Claimed to Be an Ambassador With $350 Million — Feds Say All of It Was Fake

Shannon Monet Steel, 42, of Farmington Hills, Michigan, told a California businessman she was a banker sitting on $350 million in assets, then handed him a "Bank Confirmation Letter" from Deutsche Bank showing €300 million in holdings. He wired her $200,000. Deutsche Bank later confirmed the document "was not issued by us and is not authentic."

In March 2024, she stood next to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and collected a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award.

Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Michigan now say Steel's entire public identity was fabricated. She claimed to be the ambassador of the Central African Republic to the United States. She claimed to own a bank called Steel Private Bank. She claimed to have purchased and renovated an Embassy Suites hotel in Southfield, Michigan. The State Department's Office of Foreign Missions confirmed she held no accredited diplomatic status whatsoever.

Special Agent Erik Nygren of the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service laid it out in the criminal complaint: "Shannon Steel has displayed a public persona as the owner of a bank with significant assets, an ambassador, and a successful hotel owner, with representations that are either materially false or grossly misleading."

The investigation began when a journalist contacted the State Department to verify Steel's ambassador claim. That one phone call unraveled everything. Prosecutors say the fraud stretches from 2022 through 2026, with at least eight victims and more than $1.05 million in documented losses. Ramada Worldwide had already secured a judgment of over $1.5 million against her.

Steel was arrested on September 1, 2026, and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. She faces a single count of wire fraud carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award is administered through AmeriCorps. The program was later suspended due to fraud and poor oversight — which tells you roughly how much vetting went into handing out awards with the word "Presidential" on them. Steel publicized photos of herself alongside Biden and Harris. Nobody in the administration apparently thought to check whether the "ambassador" collecting a White House honor actually held a diplomatic post. One phone call to the State Department would have answered that.

The same administration that spent four years lecturing Americans about "misinformation" gave a lifetime achievement award to a woman whose entire biography was misinformation. A fabricated ambassadorship. A nonexistent bank. A hotel she didn't own. Assets that existed only on forged Deutsche Bank letterhead.

Steel's defense attorney, Alison Furtaw, has not commented publicly on the charges. The wire fraud case is proceeding in federal court in Detroit.

A journalist made one phone call and the whole thing collapsed. The Biden White House couldn't manage that.
