Bill Maher sat down on ABC's This Week on July 19th, fresh off winning the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, and told co-anchor Jon Karl something that visibly rattled the network's Sunday morning programming: he'd vote for Vice President JD Vance in 2028. Not hypothetically. Not with fourteen caveats. Just — yes.

"Yes. If this is the Democratic side, yes."

The full exchange is worth understanding, because what happened around that answer matters as much as the answer itself. Karl asked Maher directly whether he could see himself voting for Vance. Maher didn't hedge. He said his vote is "in play" for 2028 precisely because Trump won't be on the ballot. "I'm not living in communist America," Maher said, and then started listing exactly why he thinks that's where the Democratic Party is headed.

This is Bill Maher we're talking about. Not some right-wing podcaster looking for clicks. The man has hosted Real Time on HBO for over two decades. He endorsed every Democratic presidential nominee in living memory. He had Vance on his show just last month. And now he's reading the Democratic Socialists of America's platform on national television and calling it what it is.

"I've read the quotes from the DSA platform, from their own mouths," Maher said. "Don't tell me I'm not seeing what I am seeing." He cited DSA proposals to take over key industries and dismantle government structures. "They say things like, you know, takeover of key industries, government. That's communism. You know, there is a definition."

He wasn't done. "No prisons, no police. Like what world did they think we could possibly live in?" He called Democrats "cowardly" for letting the takeover happen. "Their party is being taken over now," he said, adding that "every day I hear about a new very radical" figure gaining influence. On the pro-Hamas campus movement, he drew a hard line: "When we're cheering for the intifada, I gotta cut, I'm out."

Now here's where it gets interesting. Host Karl repeatedly changed the subject every time Maher went after the DSA and the leftward lurch of the Democratic Party. Maher would build momentum on the communism point, and Karl would pivot to a Trump topic. At one point, when Maher was laying out the DSA's platform goals, Karl interjected: "By the way, Trump's doing that, too." The comparison of Trump's business practices to the DSA's proposal to abolish the Senate, eliminate the presidency, and dismantle the Supreme Court is the kind of false equivalence that makes people stop watching Sunday morning television.

Maher actually predicted Democrats will do well in the 2026 midterms, because those races will still function as a referendum on Trump. But he distinguished the midterms from 2028, warning that by the next presidential cycle, the radical wing of the party — the one with all the energy — will be much larger. That's not a Fox News talking point. That's an HBO liberal who's watched his own side from the inside and doesn't like what he sees.

The DSA's platform, for anyone who hasn't read it, does in fact call for eliminating the U.S. Senate, replacing the presidency with a congressional-chosen executive, abolishing the Supreme Court, and dismantling police and prison systems. New York's DSA chapter co-chair Gustavo Gordillo leads an organization whose stated goals would require scrapping the Constitution and starting over. When Maher says "that's communism," he's not being hyperbolic. He's being descriptive.

Karl had a comedian on his Sunday show who wanted to talk about the most consequential ideological shift in the Democratic Party in a generation. The network's instinct was to steer him back to Trump. Maher wouldn't go. The audience noticed. And somewhere in the ABC control room, a producer learned that the most dangerous guest isn't the one who disagrees with you — it's the one who agrees with your viewers.
