Jennifer Honka's French Language and Culture classroom at Northeast Early College in Denver operated under one rule above all others: "the answer is always 'yes.'"
Students reported during the 2023-24 school year that Honka required them to perform scripted skits — including scenes where students acted out kissing, with same-sex pairings assigned. When complaints reached the district, Honka, 50, was investigated, reviewed by an administrative law judge, and fired by a unanimous 7-0 board vote, as reported by American Wire News.
She had three consecutive years of the highest possible performance ratings before any of this surfaced. She was a union representative who had filed 18 grievances on behalf of colleagues. By every institutional measure, Honka was not a problem — right up until her students decided they'd had enough.
Administrative law judge Keith J. Kirchubel was direct in his findings. "Regardless of whether [Honka] 'forced' the participants to kiss," he wrote, "her choice of script forced them to express their preferences." The activity itself put students in a position where refusal — or silence — became a public act. The classroom rule that the answer is always yes made that position harder to navigate.
Kirchubel concluded that "while the notion of using skits as a way to teach French Language may have been effective in general, the way it was implemented by [Honka] was irresponsible and inappropriate."
Consider what the timeline actually shows. The school didn't catch this. The administration didn't flag it. The union — whose representative Honka was — didn't raise concerns. Students had to be the ones to report their own teacher. Every protective system that exists for children in a classroom failed to function until the children themselves made it function.
Denver Public Schools responded with a statement: "the safety, emotional well-being, and dignity of our students are the absolute highest priorities." Those priorities, by the district's own accounting, weren't triggered until after students filed complaints about a teacher whose classroom philosophy was that you can't say no.
The vote answers what happened to Jennifer Honka. It doesn't fully answer how a rule like "the answer is always yes" survived three years of institutional review without raising a flag. Schools operate under real pressure to demonstrate inclusion and affirmation — and when that becomes the institutional default, questions about student consent can get harder to ask. Honka's classroom had a rule that made refusal the exception. Somehow that never showed up in three years of evaluations.
The students who reported her did something significant. They navigated a system built to give teachers institutional protection — union representation, performance reviews, administrative standing — and they made it work anyway. They are the reason this ended.
That part of the story deserves to be said clearly.
