Cameron Lyon was 23 years old, a social studies teacher at Crestline Exempted Village School District, an Otterbein University graduate, and as of this past July, newly engaged to his fiancée Abrielle Kerns. On a road in Fairfield County, Ohio, a 2016 GMC Terrain driven by 33-year-old Alvaro Uribe Gonzalez slammed into their 2025 Chevrolet Trax on Route 33. Lyon was killed. Kerns, also 23, was injured.

Gonzalez had already been deported once. He came back anyway.

According to American Wire News, Gonzalez first entered the country illegally in January 2020. He was caught, removed, and apparently decided that was more of a suggestion than a consequence. He's now facing charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, DUI, and operating a vehicle without a valid license. He's being held without bond.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the crash. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer with Ohio officials, requesting they not release Gonzalez so ICE can remove him from the country. Again.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin didn't sugarcoat it. "Cameron had his whole life ahead of him, and that life was stolen by this criminal who never should have been in our country in the first place," Mullin said. He added: "ICE has lodged a detainer asking officials in Ohio to cooperate with us and not release him from jail, so that we can remove him from this country. Deporting illegal aliens is our duty because it saves lives."

Ohio Senator Jon Husted pointed out the pattern nobody in Washington wants to talk about. "I am outraged to learn of another Ohioan who lost their life," Husted said. "This is the third death of an Ohioan by an illegal immigrant driver on our roads in 10 days."

Three deaths. Ten days. One state. All preventable.

Republican Ohio gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy called it what it is: "The tragic death of Cameron Lyon is a consequence of Biden's tragic open border policies." The open-borders crowd spent years telling us the border was secure, the system was working, that anyone who wanted a wall was a xenophobe. Cameron Lyon's family can't be comforted by their talking points.

The deportation system caught Gonzalez the first time. It identified him, processed him, and physically removed him from American soil. The system did its job. And then the system's complete inability to keep him out made all of that work meaningless. A drunk driver with no valid license, who'd already been told by the United States government that he wasn't welcome here, was back behind the wheel on an Ohio highway.

Cameron Lyon spent his days teaching kids about how their country works. He'd just asked the woman he loved to marry him. He had a career, a community, a future that was supposed to stretch out for decades.

The deportation order stretches out for exactly as long as it takes to walk back across.
