We just watched a man open fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. We’ve read his manifesto. We know his donation history. We know he was Teacher of the Month. And if you’re being honest with yourself — truly, painfully honest — none of us are surprised. Because we all knew this was coming. The only question was when.
But sure, let’s hear another lecture about how conservative speech is “dangerous” from the people who spent half a decade building an assassination permission slip and handing it out like candy at a parade.
Let me walk you through how this works, because the media sure as hell won’t.
Step one: You call the President “literally Hitler” — not as hyperbole, not as a joke, but as a sincere political position repeated by senators, professors, journalists, and celebrities with platforms reaching hundreds of millions of people. You do this every single day for years.
Step two: You normalize assassination fantasies. Kathy Griffin holds up a severed head. A Shakespeare in the Park production stabs a Trump lookalike to death nightly to standing ovations. Comedians “joke” about it. Writers fantasize about it. A sniper shoots Trump’s ear off at a rally and within 48 hours they’re back to calling him a fascist dictator.
Step three: You create an entire moral framework — “punch a Nazi,” “no platform for fascists,” “silence is violence” — that explicitly justifies physical force against people you’ve labeled as existential threats to democracy.
Step four: You act shocked — SHOCKED — when an unstable person connects the dots you drew for them.
That’s not a slippery slope argument. That’s a pipeline. And we just watched it produce another body count.
The WHCD shooter donated to Kamala Harris. He was honored as Teacher of the Month at his school. He wasn’t some fringe lunatic living in a bunker — he was a mainstream liberal who consumed mainstream liberal media and absorbed mainstream liberal messaging. He did exactly what they told him the moral thing to do was.
Think about that. Really sit with it.
If you tell someone — every day, through every institution, on every platform — that a political figure is an existential threat to humanity, that he’s a dictator, that he’ll end democracy, that he’s putting people in camps… what exactly do you think the “heroic” response to that is? If Trump were ACTUALLY Hitler, wouldn’t violence be justified? Wouldn’t it be a moral obligation?
That’s the trap. That’s the permission slip. You radicalize people with rhetoric and then pretend you bear no responsibility for the actions that rhetoric produces.
And it’s not just the shooter. Look at what happened THIS SAME WEEK. A brewery owner in Wisconsin offered free beer if Trump gets assassinated. Free beer. For murder. That’s how normalized this has become — it’s a promotional deal. It’s a happy hour theme. Assassination as a marketing strategy.
These aren’t isolated incidents. They’re data points on a trend line that every honest person can see.
But let’s talk about who WON’T see it — the enablers. The people who built this pipeline and refuse to own it.
The media personalities who called Trump Hitler thousands of times and now say “well, we didn’t mean it LITERALLY.” You didn’t? Because somebody took you at your word.
The politicians who said Trump would “end democracy” and now act surprised when their voters treat him like a threat that needs to be physically stopped.
The celebrities who fantasized about violence against Trump on camera and called it “art” and “resistance” and “speaking truth to power.”
The professors who taught an entire generation that political violence against fascists is morally justified — then labeled everyone to the right of Bernie Sanders a fascist.
You built this. All of you. Every “Resistance” hashtag. Every Hitler comparison. Every assassination joke that got a knowing laugh at a dinner party. Every time you said “by any means necessary” and winked. Every manifesto was written collaboratively — the shooter just held the pen.
And here’s what makes me furious. Tomorrow — maybe even today — these same people will be back on television talking about how CONSERVATIVE rhetoric is dangerous. How Trump’s language is inflammatory. How WE need to tone it down. They will look into a camera with a straight face and lecture the people whose president just got shot at about the dangers of heated political speech.
They will do this without shame. Without self-awareness. Without a single moment of reflection.
Because they don’t think they did anything wrong. In their minds, they’re still the good guys. The shooter was just… troubled. A lone wolf. An aberration that has nothing to do with the five years of escalating rhetoric that preceded him.
We know better. America knows better. And history will record exactly who spent a decade normalizing political violence and then feigned ignorance when it arrived.
The permission slip has been revoked. The adults see what you did. And we’re never going to let you forget it.
